Def Rhymz Honored with Impressive Mural in Crooswijk
A spectacular mural of 250 square meters honors the legacy of Dutch hip-hop pioneer Def Rhymz in his home neighborhood of Crooswijk. The artwork, which required more than two hundred spray cans and forty liters of latex paint, showcases two sides of the rapper who passed away in March.
From Neighborhood Boy to Hip-Hop Icon. Artists Che Lanser and Roy Valk collaborated on this special tribute. Lanser has a personal connection with Dennis Bouman (Def Rhymz): "I used to play in the square behind Van Meekerenstraat. Dennis was a few years older. He and his friends were always busy with music. He is one of the founders of hip-hop in the Netherlands."
Two Sides of a Legend
The design deliberately shows two sides of Def Rhymz. "Most people know the crazy Def Rhymz with his tongue sticking out and diving goggles. We see that on one side. But he was also a husband and father. We see that on the other side," explains Valk (known as graffiti artist Karski).
Community Involvement at the Center
The mural was created with care and in consultation with the neighborhood. "It impacts the district. That's why it's important that the neighborhood embraces it. We made two designs that people could vote on," says Valk, who is known for his large-scale murals.
The reactions from passersby speak volumes: "Beautiful, amazing. It's just like a photo, man!" The artwork ensures that Def Rhymz's legacy lives on in the neighborhood where he grew up.
